Dog Jog 2003: A day in the life of a dog

by Rusty Emerson

The Dog Jog is my favorite day of the year. The students at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine have put it on every year since 1994, and I've participated in every Dog Jog since 1997 when I was just a puppy. Although I have to drag Andy, I have managed to be the first dog with a male human to cross the finish line in 2006, 2004, 2003, 2002 and 2001. I was second in 2000 and fourth in 1999, and I didn't get to run in 2005. Here's a picture of Andy and me after winning our prize for Dog Jog 2003: a 3-month membership at Gold's Gym. As you can tell from visiting his web page, Andy is really into fitness.

After the race, we got back into our Honda Element

and drove to the Doggie Empawrium in the Forum Shopping Center. Here's a picture of Andy and me posing with a German Shepherd statue outside the Doggie Empawrium. I don't think I would be any more adorable if my ears stood up. Do you?

Once inside the Doggie Empawrium, we get down to business: picking out the home-baked treats that I so richly deserve. Note the look of concentration on my face. It's a tough decision!

In keeping with the theme of the day (It's all about ME), we went to the dog park at Twin Lakes next. I love swimming

and running at the dog park.

As you can imagine, after all this, I was exhausted. We went home, and I waited patiently until all the cats got out of my bed (this was the bed I won in Dog Jog 2001, by the way)

and took a nap.

I don't remember this part, but apparently I spent some sleep time on the human bed too.
